today, every Friday on NYSD's West Coast edition, Los Angeles
Social Diary will feature a new column: The DuPont Twins
in Hollywood. |
We attended two HBO parties this month for two of their shows.
The party at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood around the David
Hockney-painted pool was for Entourage. We were so glad to see
our longtime friend Debi Mazar there looking tres
chic. Our days
with Debi go all the way back to when she was slathering makeup
on the face of Her Majesty, Madonna, in the early 80s.
Debi plays a publicist by the name of Shauna in Entourage and steals
every episode she’s in. we collared executive producer Mark
Wahlberg and suggested he have his writers build up Debi’s
part. And he told us, that’s “exactly what we’re
planning to have them do.”
Guests at the party included Casey Johnson, Kevin Connolly
and Nicky Hilton, Brett Ratner and Serena Williams, Amanda Demme,
Dodd
Mitchell, Lisa Eisner and Liz Goldwyn who told us her documentary,
Pretty Things, will be premiering on HBO in July. Also there: Amanda
Peet and Kevin Dillon, both of whom appear
in Entourage, and who arrived with Kevin’s brother Matt.
The other HBO party was for Lisa Kudrow’s first series since
Friends, The Comeback. As Lisa explained it: “It is a show
within a show about a woman who was on another show.” We
thought that sounded a mite too familiar but were assured by the
actress, “It is not Lisa Kudrow doing a reality show about
her comeback.” Her character is Valerie Cherish and it emerged
a few months after she taped the final episode of Friends and completed
filming Dan Roos and Holly Wiersma’s film Happy
Endings,
(which closes the Los Angeles Film Festival this week).
Jennifer Aniston was not at the HBO party but we did see Matthew
Perry there who attended with his good friend Jonathan
Rhys Meyers who told us he’s playing an associate of Tom
Cruise’s
character Ethan Hunt in M:I-3.
Spotted at the Bel-Air Hotel: Charlize Theron and her boyfriend
of four years, Stuart Townsend, although the tabloids already have
Charlize making whoopee with her co-star of her latest (untitled)
film, Woody Harrelson. Another rag has her partying with Jennifer
Garner’s ex- and Alias co-star Michael Vartan at the very
hot club Mood in Hollywood.
The other celebrity we spied at the Bel-Air the same evening was
Val Kilmer, taking a break from his starring role on the London
stage in “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” His dinner
partner was Zeta Graff, Greek-born actress and ex-wife of Francois
Graff, heir to a diamond fortune said to be in the area of $150
million, some of which was awarded to Zeta in their divorce.
Zeta co-starred with Bruce Willis in The Fifth
Element and was
one involved romantically with Paris Latsis who
is now the fiancée
of another Paris. Zeta denied that one of the
diamond rings she was wearing came from Val. The 35-year-old actress
smiled and said “They’re
all from Francois.”
Carolina Herrera has joined the ranks of other designers of couture
wear in marching in the Barbie brigade. The latest Mattel model
of conspicuous consumption, the blonde Barbie doll is wearing a
beaded-wedding gown with corded lace, based on one of the nuptial
outfits in Herrera’s own bridal collection.
We didn’t hear about this from Mattel or our friend Carolina
Herrera, but from one of our trusty spy-witnesses who saw a foursome
having lunch at the Chateau marmont: Katie Holmes (without Tom
Cruise) and two of her girlfriends and, yes, Barbie, resplendent
in the above-described wedding gown, the latest in Mattel’s
series in its designer collection, which is shipping to stores
later in the month.
Those two tabloid favorites, Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis, are
said to be hiding out from the prying lenses of the paparazzi on
the Latsis family yacht, The Alexander, the pride of their fleet
of yachts, which is the world’s third largest. It is our
understanding that Britain’s Prince William and his girlfriend
Kate Middleton, a real looker, will be coming aboard along with
a number of other swells for a Mediterranean cruise. Try as we
did to get someone, anyone, to confirm this story, there was no
one who would do so. We do know that the Latsis family has hosted
Princes Charles and both of his wives, the late Diana,
Princess of Wales and the current Camilla, the
Duchess of Cornwall on cruises
in the past, so we aren’t discounting the story.
Paris Hilton first met Paris Latsis, whom she calls “Babalu” (don’t
even ask) when they were both teenagers partying at Jimmy’z
nightclub in Monte Carlo. They will revisit the club this summer
at some point during their stay in the South of France, where the
club will throw an engagement party for them. Of course, the distaff
Paris will be showing off some of her recent acquisitions from
Sue Firestone and Mimi Woolf’s Tamsen Collection – some
simple and elegant dresses and sarongs that can go from the Latsis
yacht to a black-tie affair with equal ease.
Scarlett Johansson has reneged on her vow not to ever date anyone
under the age of 30. That was before she got a gander of Josh
Hartnett,
her 6 foot 4 inch co-star in Brian DePalma’s retelling of
the infamous rape, murder and dismemberment of goodtime girl and
part-time actress Elizabeth Short, forever remembered as The
Black Dahlia.
The 20-year-old Johansson and the 27-year-old Hartnett were recently
spotted at Laguna Beach’s Montage Hotel where they did the
usual things that a couple in love does: holding hands, hugging,
kissing. Our spies report that Scarlett and Josh also did time
on surfboards catching a few waves. We’d heard that Josh
had spent quality time in Scarlett’s trailer on location
for The Black Dahlia and that the two had several dinner dates.
We were at the Motion Picture Academy’s Goldwyn Theatre for
the screening of the first forty-five minutes of director Michael
Bay’s $100 million sci-fi thriller, The Island, in which
Scarlett Johansson has a starring part. Scarlett was there and
since she was alone when we approached her, we asked, “Where
is Josh?”
She ignored the question, smiled sweetly and said of her role in
the film we were about to see an excerpt of: “I have never
had to run so much of my life. I was hurled across strange, dimly-lit
alleyways and had to lie down on the back of a flying motorcycle
(in the film).”
OK; we got her message loud and clear and decided to forego the
questions about her personal life. We asked her about her Woody
Allen film, the dark relationship thriller, Match
Point, which
was screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, garnering
some of the best reviews Allen has ever received. DreamWorks has
picked it up and plans to pursue the top film festivals in the
fall, as well as an Oscar campaign for the film, including a supporting
actress nomination for Scarlett.
Our trusty spies in Laguna Beach also told us that they saw Teri
Hatcher dining at the Madison Square Garden Café with Adam
Duritz and her daughter. While in Laguna, Teri bought herself a
villa at the Residences at Montage, spending a hefty $5 million
of her Desperate Housewives earnings, not only for its ocean-front
vista, but also the Montage’s full-time concierge, spa and
three restaurants and private beach, and also its access to the
Shady Canyon Golf Club that Teri’s recently become a member
of.
As is so often the case, whenever we dine at Mr. Chow,
we were seated at a table next to a celebrity and that happened
recently
with 31-year-old Christian Bale, the Welsh-born actor and star
of Batman Begins who was having a bite to eat with his wife Sibi
Blazic.
His interest in the role only began when director Christopher
Nolan (Memento) convinced him that the new film would not be jocular
or campy like its predecessors. Said Bale: “When I first
put on the Batman costume I felt like an idiot. I just stood there
thinking, ‘aww man.’ Then I stomped around like a big
cat crossed with an ape trying to behave like some bizarre mythological
creature. Because that’s what Batman is.”
Exiting the restaurant, we happened upon two beautiful couples
as they walked in: Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher and Kevin
Costner and his lovely bride Christine. A double date, we wondered? “Yes,” said
Ashton. “Kevin and I are doing a film together for Touchstone,
The Guardian.” Friends of ours who were also at Mr. Chow
and remained after we left, called us to tell us they overheard
Ashton mention that he and a few of his buddies would be catching
a few Rolling Stone concerts this summer.
Without a doubt, Jeff Klein hosts some of the best parties in town.
So when we received an invitation from him for a dinner party at
his elegant new Argyle Hotel restaurant with its smashing new look
created by Paul Fortune, we accepted immediately. We brought along
our good friends, producer Christine Peters and Beverly
Hills 213 publisher Seth Baker.
Sampling chef Colin Cranrell’s spectacular cuisine were John
Goldwyn and Colleen Camp, Dolce and Gabbana’s Angela
Janklow, Paul Fortune, Donovan Leitch, Rebecca de Mornay, Tatiana
von Furstenberg,
China Chow, Jacqui Getty, Elizabeth Banks, who stars in the Merchant-Ivory
drama The Heights, Mitch Glazer and Kelly Lynch,
Anjelica Huston
and Tom Ford.
It was a wonderful evening of dining and conversation and we actually
regretted when it came to an end. As we were leaving the hotel,
we ran into Balthazar Getty and his childhood friend Scott
Thomas who were just arriving. The two have formed a band, Ringside, which
has recently released its first CD. That’s all from Hollywood. |
