Nouveau Film and Classical Architecture

There were movie stars, and Oscar winners, and supermodels, and rock and rollers, and a large contingent of New York’s hipsters and most glamorous flocked to the Tribeca Grand for what turned out to be, in retrospect, one of the most coveted invites of the holiday season — the Cinema Society exclusive screening of DreamWorks Pictures release of Woody Allen’s latest — “Match Point.”

Scarlett Johansson and Woody Allen

The film is a dramatic thriller about ambition, the seduction of wealth, and sexual passion. It premiered to rave reviews in Cannes earlier this year, and is being hailed as one of Woody’s all-time best, garnering 4 Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress (Scarlett Johansson).

Woody himself and the film’s stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Emily Mortimer, and Matthew Goode, all were on hand along with Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir, for the screening and dinner which followed at the Soho Grand. Everyone involved was the object of accolades and raves from the attending glitterati. It was a love-fest tribute to an enormous talent. Ironically, the prolific writer/director gave an interview to a British paper in which he described himself as “mediocre.” Contemporary film, American or internationally, should have such mediocrity.

The crowd itself was so stellar that many were comparing it to a Golden Globes, or even the Vanity Fair Oscar party. Celebrities and boldfaced names everywhere you looked. Alongside Woody and the film’s cast were Bette Midler, Alec Baldwin, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Patricia Clarkson, Marcia Gay Harden, Josh Lucas, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Daniels, The Sopranos’ Michael Imperioli, Josh Hartnett, supermodels Helena Christensen, Liya Kibede, Bridget Hall, and Gemma Ward, Michael Stipe, Chazz Palminteri, Matthew Modine, Damon Dash and Rachel Roy, Alessandro Nivola, Amy Sacco, Rufus Albemarle, Daniel Benedict, Amanda Brooks, Olivia Chantecaille, Jennifer Creel, Emilia Fanjul, Peter and Jamee Gregory, Marjorie Gubelmann Raein, Jill Kargman, Jane Lauder, Tinsley Mortimer, Marisa Noel Brown, Marina Rust, Marielle Safra, Allison Sarofim, Helen Schifter, Ivanka Trump, Bettina Zilkha, Hogan's Samantha Gregory and Emanuele Della Valle, DreamWorks’ Pictures Diana Loomis, and the film’s producers Letty Aronson and Gareth Wiley.

The evening was sponsored by Hogan, and benefited Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation. It was one of those nights that even the most jaded New Yorkers will not forget for its high profile audience witnessing a legendary director’s triumph. Only in New York!

Last week The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America hosted an exhibition, holiday cocktail party, and benefit auction at McKim, Mead and White's Landmark, the Racquet and Tennis Club at 370 Park Avenue.

Key sponsors for the event were Taconic Builders and SellJewelry Inc. The evening included both a live and silent auction, the live auction of which was conducted by Christopher Gaillard of Sotheby’s. The silent auction included a comprehensive look at classical expression today in its full diversity, including drawings by Jaquelin Robertson, Robert Wilson, and Anton Glikin; a model of The Temple of Four Winds, Castle Howard by Timothy Richards; a wrought iron chandelier by Les Metalliers Champenois; a watercolor sketch by Victor Deupi and an architectural snow globe from Ferguson and Shamamian Architects.

Also on view were photographs, lithographs and drawings by Adrienne Vittadini, John Beerman, David Genther, James Bleecker, and Jeffrey Bilhuber. Full proceeds will assist the Institute in expanding its national program of design education, advocacy and appreciation for the classical tradition, including an affordable housing partnership with Habitat for Humanity.
