The
National Leadership Commission on AIDS Choose Life Award, which
is presented to leaders who demonstrated a commitment to the
fight against HIV/AIDS, is the organization’s highest
and most prestigious honor. The term “Choose Life” is
taken from the Bible. In chapter 30, verse 19 in the book of
Deuteronomy it states - “therefore choose life that both
thou and thy seed may live…” This biblical passage
reminds us of our duty to help communities of color who continue
to struggle with HIV and AIDS worldwide.
A portion of the events proceeds are being donated to the rebuilding of HIV/AIDS
services in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina caused the displacement and deprived
more then 8,000 people living with HIV/AIDS adequate medical care. Funds raised
will ensure that quality services are returned to the Gulf Coast and will support
community development efforts within those regions.
National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. is the oldest
and largest Black HIV/AIDS organization of its kind in the United States. Established
in 1987, the NBLCA’s mission is to foster and promote organized indigenous
Black leadership on disease prevention and health promotion issues – especially
HIV/AIDS – within African-American communities; build and enhance the capacity
of community providers; and ensures that communities of African descent have
visible presence wherever health policy is formulated and resources are allocated. |
