Bazaars and Books

The Lenox Hill Neighborhood House hosted its 18th annual Holiday Bazaar last week taking over the entire second floor of Sotheby’s and filling it with laughter, Christmas decorations, music (provided by musicians from Alex Donner’s band), and the heavenly smell of ham, veal, salmon and other delicacies from the kitchen of Swifty’s (catering division) and the first visitors to the three day shopping event. More than 400 attended the Preview Party, including Honorary Chairs: Clo Cohen, Audrey Gruss, John Rosselli, and Natan Wekselbaum and Co-Chairs: Lorie Adams and Wendy Cebula, as well as Nancy Baker who served as the hardworking Underwriting Chair and The House’s amazing Virginia Pitman who put it all together.

One of the highlights was the A Night on the Town section of the Silent Auction, chaired by couture floral designer Helena Lehane. Quadrille Fabric and Wallpaper, Inc. donated materials from which top interior designers Geoffrey Bradfield and Roric Tobin, Albert Hadley and Harry Heissmann, Jamie Drake, Joel Allen, Sheila Camera Kotur, Phillip Gorrivan, Andrew Raquet, Alice Wainwright, Beth Martell, Carol Davis, Charlotte Moss, Eric Cohler, Gael de Brousse, Joan McGivern, Jonathan Rosen, Juan Montoya, Libby Cameron, Stewart Manger, Michael Whaley, Miles Redd, Ron Winterrowd, Dennis Rolland, Sara Bengur, Brockschmidt & Coleman and Helena Lehane, herself, created one-on-a-kind evening bags — each an homage to a legendary woman. Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Marie Antoinette, Carmen Dell'Orefice, Cleopatra, Fleur Cowles, Baby Jane Holzer, Betty Boop, Doris Day, and Gloria Guinness were among those providing inspiration.

Mario Buatta was seen departing with at least three giant bags out to the checkroom, and then heading back for more. He just could not get enough. He was followed shortly thereafter by such champion shoppers as the D&D Building’s owner Charles Cohen, Vogue magazine’s Alexandra Kotur, Tobie Roosevelt, Janna Bullock, Julia Wallace, Robert Rufino, Allison Weiss, Mark Gilbertson, Melissa Berkelhammer, Eva and Brendan Dillon, Patty Raynes, Fernanda Kellogg and Kirk Henckels, Chappy Morris, Renee and Karl Landegger, Barbara Cates, Victoria and Robert Lindgren, Roy Kean, Lise Arliss, Frances Beatty and Alex Adler, Colleen Lehane, Helaine and Hugh Tilney, Michèle Gerber Klein, Mireya and Joseph D’Angelo, Debbie Bancroft, Lara Glazier, Liz Hull, Anna Wiglama, Melinda and Charles Dubow, Ruth Fleischmann, Ingrid Edelman, Lisa Gorrivan and Paul Adams, Michel Witmer, who found a cache of rare art books. Bunny Williams, Jamie Drake and Charlotte Moss each set up tables to sign and sell their new coffee table shelter books.

On the bazaar’s The Boulevard of Shops, were CASA CASA, Hatchlings, Nina McLemore, Personal Best, Monogram Shoppe, Peter Elliot Stores, Portolano Products, The World of Antiques, Trish Bodell Hopkins Design, Ruzzetti & Gow, Valentin Magro, and Walker Antiques.

Most people hit the bazaar’s legendary Flea Market first. It was a mother lode of silver, linens, fur coats, antique furniture and furnishings, costumed jewelry and vintage clothing with such labels as Gucci, Hermes, Ferragamo, Bill Blass, Carolina Herrera, Dior, Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld, Dior, Max Mara and Chanel.

A week ago last Wednesday night Arthur W. Zeckendorf and William Lie Zeckendorf hosted a book party for architect and historian (and also Dean of the Yale School of Architecture), Robert A.M. Stern at the Sales Office of Fifteen Central Park West, Mr. Stern’s newest and most spectacular private residential apartment creation which is now abuilding on Central Park West between 62nd and 63rd Street on the the former site of the Mayflower Hotel.

The book Houses and Gardens, published by The Monacelli Press, is a beautiful photographic compilation of twenty-six of Mr. Stern’s most memorable residential designs located in superb natural settings across North America. These remarkable houses reveal the architect’s emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of place. The book itself is a beauty and a piece of art in terms of its own publishing composition, and almost heavy enough to serve as a cornerstone in one of Mr. Stern’s buildings.
