New York Nights: Boldface is as Boldface Does

Leila (Lay-la) has been in the art business for more than twenty years. A lot of her friends know her as a young mother of two boys, a devoted wife, she and her husband Henry Heller are quite good host and hostess here and in Southampton. The art came first, however; her business.

Those who knew her only as the aforementioned, could nevertheless see her in business: she’s direct, friendly, considerate and has a natural authority. And the art came first.

She opened this gallery (Leila Taghiniia-Milani Heller Gallery) a little more than a year ago, dealing in Impressionist and contemporary art. On 22 East 72nd just off Madison. For years now, she’d been conducting her business simply (which is not so simple) as a private dealer. Last month she unveiled something quite special – paintings and works on paper of Alexandre Charriol. The artist was coming fresh from his internationally acclaimed show in Hong Kong – where he was raised, by French parents.

It was called Chelsea meets Upper East Side – the paintings were created in the artist’s Chelsea studio and especially for Leila’s gallery space which is in a century-old townhouse. The work is the artist’s personal reflection on active life of a 20-something, a scion (Charriol, the brand – his family’s patriarch is Philippe) in 21st century New York – social life, club-life, 12-step meetings.

Mr. Charriol was born in Hawaii, studied at Parsons, at Tufts, at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Northeastern. He had his first important exhibition in 1999 and has shown at the Yoshii Gallery in Paris, the Ayala Museum in Manila, and at the Kee Club and Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong.

Big big turnout, including the artist’s mother Annik Charriol, Victoria Wyman, Pamela Gross and Jimmy Finkelstein, Dana and Dr. Patrick Stubgen, Elizabeth Fekkai, Martina and Fabian Basabe, Alberto Mugrabi, Scott Zenko, Jacques Leviant, Dennis Paul and Coralie Charriol, Muriel and Edmond Safra, Lisa and Lara Meiland, Charles Rockefeller, Helena Kasanova, Cindy Farkas, Nahid Taghinia-Milani, Leila’s mother, Sean Stone, Lauren Davis.

We’re late with this news so you’ve only got two days left to see the at the gallery. His work will also be included in the gallery’s group show which opens to the public on November 30th and continues through January 4th. Meanwhile, there was the opening night preview party, a private reception in the newly renovated Bryant Park showroom of alice+olivia. The evening featured a “pant bar” highlighting the Spring styles and a display of looks from the main collection. There were Buttercup Bakery cupcakes, “pant-shaped” cookies and cocktails from event sponsor Gran Centario, creator of the special “Fancy Pants” margarita. And a lot of fancier pants attended to partake and take it all in ... including Moby, those young dependables, Martina and Fabian Basabe, alice+olivia designer Stacey Bendet, Miguelina Gambaccini, Zani Gugelmann, Jamie LeFrak, Tatiana Papanicolaou, Emilia Fanjul Pfeifler, Lucy Sykes and Euan Rellie, Alex Lind Rose, Andrew Rosen, Alvin Valley, Ali Wise ...

Then two nights before, if you’re keeping track there was a party at Geoffrey Bradfield’s East Side townhouse for Douglas Hannant Fur Collection for Alexandros hosted by Frederick Anderson and Tinsley Mortimer. You’ll see those ads in October’s W. They were shot in Beth Rudin DeWoody’s Gracie Square apartment with Tinsley accompanied by her two Chihuahuas Bella and Alice. And according to the creators, the motivating look is one of “longing – Tinsley looking into the distance waiting for her husband Topper to return home.” Tinsley and Topper – where are you Scott Fitzgerald?

Alexandros Furs, was created 40 years ago by Alexandros Demetriades who has passed on his fine art of fur design to his son Tommy Demetriades who is now the creative director for Alexandros and head designer for his own Alexandros collection, Ekso. The company’s flagship store is located on 5th Avenue and 59th St.

About 200 mixed and mingled in Mr. Bradfield’s spectacular new digs (in September AD). Mrs. Mortimer – Tinsley to her friends and columnists – is the IT girl of the moment in New York, and this party also marked her debut as the model for Mr. Hannant. So you’ll be seeing even MORE of Tinsley, to stoke your literary imagination.

In the crowd: Jill Roosevelt, Minnie Mortimer, Debbie Bancroft, Alice Judelson, Andrea and John Stark and their daughter Ashley Stark, Clo Cohen, Arnold Scaasi and Parker Ladd, Dana and Dr. Patrick Stubgen, Coco and Arie Kopelman and their daughter Jill Kargman, Felicia Taylor, Patty Raynes, Michèle Gerber Klein, Cornelia Bregman, Lucia Hwong Gordon, Michele Herbert, Sharon Sondes and Geoffrey Thomas, Melissa Berkelhammer, Michel Witmer, Bettina Zilhka, Andrew Saffir, Roric Tobin, Montgomery Frazier, Larry and Denise Wohl, personal stylist Barbara Sussberg, Tatiana Boncampagni, Andrew Black, Heather Cohane, Helena Lehane, Luis Estevez, visiting from Montecito, with Ann Rapp; art dealer Yung Hee Kim, Sal Strazzullo, Amy Hoadley, and Fabiola Beracasa. Everybody but Martina and Fabian ... how’d that happen?
