Last Monday night, the Institute of International Education held its Annual Benefit Dinner at the Pierre. The IIE honored Goldman Sachs with its Opening Minds Corporate Leadership Award for the company’s exemplary leadership and outstanding commitment to education and corporate social responsibiility around the world. Chairman and CEO Henry M. Paulson Jr. accepted the award for his firm.

Renee Fleming and Alberto Vitale served as Fulbright co-chairs for the Gala. More than 400 leaders in business, education, public policy, media, philanthropy and the arts attended, including Maria Bartiromo, Peter Gottsegen (Partner CAI Partners), Thomas Johnson (Former President and CEO, GreenPoint Bank), Henry Kaufman, John C. Whitehead.

They also presented the Fritz Redlich Alumni Award to four dynamic young social entrepreneurs from the US and China who are alumni of the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program. The four have developed a groundbreaking program, Technology Education Connecting Cultures (TECC) to combat poverty and advance education in China through technology.

Last Tuesday, at Verdura’s newly renovated salon at 745 Fifth Avenue, Ward and Judith Landrigan and their son Nico, held a cocktail reception to celebrate the centennial of Greta Garbo, along with the launch of the latest book GARBO: Portraits from her Private Collection, published by Rizzoli about the legendary actress, co-authored by Robert Dance and Garbo’s grand-nephew Scott Reisfield.

Several members of Garbo’s family including the co-author and Don and Gray Reisfeld and Derek Reisfeld were on hand along with Kenneth Jay Lane, John Anthony, Emilia Fanjul, Carolyne Roehm, Reed and Delphine Krakoff, Katherine Bryan, Aja Mangum, Topsy Taylor, Laura Yaggy, Isabelle Kellogg, Ki Hackney, R. Verdura also unveiled the limited edition silver curb-link bracelet, which was made famous by the screen legend. The bracelet, made for her by her friend Fulco Verdura, was in gold, and she wore it all her life. The limited edition (and first Verdura jewelry to be made in sterling silver) will be available through Verdura in New York, and at Bergdorf Goodman and Wynn & Company for $1950. The original 18-karat gold curb-link bracelet retails for $7500 and is available at the same locations.

Mayor Bloomberg’s officially proclaimed last September 12th Decoration & Design Day to honor the 40th anniversary of the legendary D&D Building at 979 Third Avenue.

To mark the occasion, the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, represented by board members Diana Quasha, Audrey Gruss, Eva Dillon, Tom Edelman, and Sydney Shuman, threw a rousing birthday party for the Building and its owners Charles and Clo Cohen, who gave The House a generous donation to mark the occasion.

The party was held on the 14th floor in the newly refurbished Astra Café, which had been transformed for the evening by the mayor’s own designer Jamie Drake, who thought “ruby,” which is the traditional 40th anniversary gift. He adorned the reception tables with red and gold silk, satin and velvet fabrics from the building’s vendors, heart, star and diamond shaped rubies and dark porcelain vases filled with large sprays of crab apple tree branches, provided by florist extraordinaire Zezé. Jamie looked outstanding himself in a pink with lavender pin striped suit and matching silk tie.

The hors d’oeuvres were prepared by Charlie Palmer. Alex Donner and his band put everyone in the mood for a good time. The night was balmy with a warm September breeze as guests ventured out on the balcony that overlooking the magical Manhattan skyline.
