They held the 36th annual Lake Placid Horse Show from June 28th through July 10th. Actually, it’s called the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows. It was held every day (except July 4th) at the North Elba Showgrounds in Lake Placid. They featured the $60,000 Budweiser Grandprix CSI 2 and the $75,000 Hermes I Love New York CSI 2.

Of all the great horseshows in the country, the Lake Placid is perhaps the most family oriented. With 3000 to 4000 daily visitors and participants, people come from far and wide. Entire families often stay for the entire two weeks and even longer to participate in the show but also to take advantage of the resort which features the Olympic Village.

This year the show had a new time schedule: everyone was out of the show grounds by 5:30 so that they could be free to also waterski, climb, hike, fish or skate, or just enjoy the spectacular Adirondack environment. The weather was perfect this year – high 70s, mid-80s during the day and in the 50s at night.

The show is produced by the Lake Placid Horse Show Association. Its chairman is Richard Feldman, an equestrian extraordinaire like I’ve never known. I’m sure there are others, but Richard, who is a longtime stockbroker at Lehman Brothers, is one of the rare ones. During the year, he’s up every morning at 4:30 or 5 and riding in Central Park on his horse that he keeps in the stables on the West Side. When and if he travels, he repeats this schedule (and often takes more time) wherever he goes, and I mean wherever – last summer we were traveling in the same party in Italy, and he was riding every morning at a brilliant facility outside Rome.

To say that he’s a booster of young equestrians and equestriennes everywhere, not to mention the horses, not to mention the Lake Placid Horseshow, is a great understatement. He loves it, and it loves him back, as you may be able to conclude in some of these photographs.

Joanne and Roberto de Guardiola hosted a luncheon to honor all the past and present chairwomen of the Southampton Hospital Summer Party

It was a luncheon last Friday at Joanne and Roberto de Guardiola's beautiful Southampton estate which was built many moons ago by an Andrew Carnegie daughter. Or was it a niece? Or was it a brother?

The purpose of the luncheon was to honor
all the past and present chairwomen of the Southampton Hospital Summer Party.

The Hospital party is one of the top charitable events of the summertime Hamptons. It was put on the map many moons ago by the Old Guard who used their sway and checkbooks to get out the troops and raise what now has become millions for the hospital. It is a very rare occurrence that a local hospital, a hundred miles from the metropolis gets the kind of attention and backing that the Southampton Hospital gets. But it is a rare occurrence that so many of the rich and powerful of today’s world reside in summertime (and now even year round on weekends) near a local hospital.

So there they were. The tables were set up in the old Carnegie stable which the de Guardiolas turned into a brilliant party house quite a few years ago. It’s very open and sits right next to the pool, so there’s lots of light and it’s very cool. And if it rains, which it used to do occasionally, everyone’s protected and even enchanted by the sound of the rain on the roof.

Before lunch the guests served cocktails on the terrace while the pretty young daughters of the Southampton set modeled Harry Winston jewels- including an 81-karat D-flawless pendant for $6.5 million. A couple of those’ll get you a house in the de Guardiolas’ neighborhood – maybe – so you see what a bargain it might be.

At the de Guardiolas'
The luncheon models bedecked in Harry Winston were dressed by Southampton and Palm Beach designer/retailer Steven Stolman in a variety of leopard print designs. The theme of this year’s party will be "Safari Summer,” in case you’re wondering.

Meanwhile, in the playhouse/barn, the décor
was beige and white with round tables covered in burlap, dark wood ballroom chairs, centerpieces of white orchids, seashells and starfish- and a Robbins Wolfe deconstructed Cobb salad lunch. What exactly is a deconstructed Cobb salad? Well, a constructed Cobb salad, the invention of the lady named Mrs. Cobb whose husband owned the Brown Derby restaurant back in the old days of Hollywood, is made of bacon, lettuce, tomato, chopped egg, sliced avocado, chopped chicken, blue cheese (or Swiss, or cheddar), all mixed together, chopped up and doused in a dressing of your liking. Now of course, a Cobb salad is on many restaurant menus and it’s generally the same as the original, with, of course, improvisations that render it Not Exactly, like many other things these days.

The Southampton Hospital Summertime party organizers, however, make a Big Difference, year after year after year. This year’s honored ones were Sheila O'Malley Fuchs and Cindy Willis, hostess Joanne de Guardiola, Jamee Gregory, Hilary Geary Ross, Karen LeFrak, Pat Wood, Cathy DiMontezemolo (who are sisters, members of the enormous Murray clan of old Southampton, and lifelong summer residents of the town) and Jean Remmel Little FitzSimmons (THE grande dame of Southampton Hospital and it's biggest drum beater). Also in attendance: Barbara Smith, Judy Taubman, Kay Gilman, Brunie McKnight, Kitty McKnight, Jennifer Fisher (of Detroit and Palm Beach — their yacht Rendezvous is in Sag Harbor) Jessie Araskog, Melanie Wambold, Catesby Kilmer and Diane Holmes. Have I left anyone out? I’m sure I have.
