The International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art held their 8th annual gala opening night preview SOFA NEW YORK 2005 at the Seventh Regiment Armory at Park Avenue 67th Street three weeks ago. The event benefited the Museum of Arts & Design and its exhibitions and public programs.

SOFA NEW YORK draws more than 12,000 visitors each year and is widely considered a defining event in the decorative and fine arts world of which New York is arguably the center.

This year’s event featured more than fifty of the world’s finest galleries and dealers presenting works by more than a thousand artists that bridge craft and the decorative and the fine arts. This year’s theme was “A Taste of New York," with the creations of some of New York’s finest restaurants including Beacon, Café Boulud, Donatella David Burke, E.A.T., Fresh Shore and Coast, LaGoulue, Michael’s, Park Avenue Café and Zarela.

Event co-chairs were Sandra B. Grotta and Jack Lenor Larsen. The opening night gala was also the kick-off event for a week of arts activities. Mayor Bloomberg declared that week to be Contemporary Decorative Arts Week; Bringing Art to Life in New York City.

The gala opening night preview of SOFA NY 2005 grossed more than $250,000 for the Museum of Arts & Design, which will benefit museum exhibitions and public programs.

Last Tuesday night Mikimoto, the store on 730 Fifth Avenue, hosted along with Karen LeFrak, president of the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy, a cocktail reception to honor the Tree Trust of the Central Park Conservancy.

In honor of the women who have dedicated their time to raising funds to care for all of the park’s trees, Mikimoto made a cash donation to the Central Park Conservancy. And as an exclusive offer to the Women’s Committee, Mikimoto made an additional donation for every purchase of the Tree-of-Life brooch at Mikimoto.

Mikimoto New York is the American subsidiary of K. Mikimotoi & Co., Ltd. In 1893, the company founder Kokichi Mikimoto was the first person to develop a technique for the cultivation of pearls. Today, the business continues to be the world leader in cultured pearls of the highest quality.
