Two weeks ago friends gathered at the penthouse apartment of Kelly and Jay Sugarman for a cocktail party co-hosted by Donya and Scott Bommer to kick off the fifth annual NYFC Fall Gala. New York City Fire Commissioner (and founder of New Yorkers For Children) Nicholas Scoppetta spoke about NYFC’s importance and mission.

Commissioner Scoppetta invited two teens, Ja Ja Johnson and Cassim McKnight, to share details about some of the many programs that they have participated in that have been sponsored by NYFC, such as Adopt an Angel, in which older foster children provide mentoring to their younger children in the New York City foster care system; College Support Program – NYFC provides scholarships and materials (laptops, books, etc) to College-bound foster children; ACS Youth Conference – A program designed to teach teens about the latest developments in the foster care system, and Network to Success – A conference designed to expose high school students to a wide variety of career opportunities and to build networking and mentoring relationships.

New Yorkers For Children Fall 2005 Gala will be held on September 21st at Cipriani 42nd Street. Kelly and Donya also announced the New Yorkers For Children would be honoring Russell Simmons, founder of Def-Jam Records, for his work as head of Rush Communications and Marian Wright Edelman, Founder and CEO of The Children’s Defense Fund.

Judith Ripka opened the doors of her new flagship boutique on Madison Avenue

One night a couple of weeks ago Madison Avenue had a bit more security than usual when jeweler Judith Ripka opened the doors of her new flagship boutique at Madison Avenue between 66th and 67th Streets. Ripka’s very loyal following runs from Kate Hudson to Ivanka Trump who were all invited to fete her debut “Couture” collection of very rare diamonds and one of a kind most-precious stones.

The 1,200 square-foot store features a custom design gallery where clients can create their own one-of-a-kind masterpieces, a VIP room and a concierge who can help with necessities such as car service and restaurant reservations.

The scene at Judith Ripka's new boutique
The big draw however was that Ripka had hired her very own Brinks truck which she filled with the evening’s goody bags to park outside. The armed driver deftly handed bags to each of the lucky attendees such as Nina Griscom, Marjorie Raein, Jennifer Creel, Tinsley Mortimer, Sally Albemarle, Muffie Potter Aston, Ivanka Trump, Candace Bushnell, Pamela Fiori, Somers Farkas, Fern Mallis, Thom Filicia, Dennis Basso, Mary McFadden, Jeffrey and Linda Chodorow, Tiffany Dubin and Patrick McDonald.

Judith also enlisted the services of her favorite luxury hote, The Wheatleigh, in Lenox, Massachusetts to cater the fete and the lovely Sofia Coppola to premiere her newest sparkling wine, the “Sofia Rose” from her very own vineyard in Napa Valley.

The new boutique is designed by Tristan Harstan and the topiarys were designed by Preston Bailey.
