The Second Annual TeachersCount Spring Fling was held last Tuesday at Hiro Ballroom at the Maritime Hotel. The evening which began at 9 PM went late into the night, was hosted by Zac Posen and Alexandra Posen. Honorary Chair was Claire Danes. Liquor was provided by Dewar’s 12 and Grey Goose. And JUS SK kept the crowd grooving. They packed in about 500 guests and raised $100,000 for the cause.

TeachersCount is a national, independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving the teaching community. Its mission is to improve teachers’ quality of life by providing them with valuable information, services and resources, all at no cost to them, and to raise the status of the teaching profession in America.

Zac Posen on TeachersCount: “A great teacher inspires curiosity and sparks the life long process and joy of learning. Education is an honor and the people who facilitate imagination and knowledge should be the most celebrated people on earth.” We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

On Monday, May 16th, Seeds of Peace held its annual gala dinner for over 500 guests that honored board members Helaine and Fred Gould and awarded CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Ami Ayalon and Sa'eb Erekat with the John P. Wallach Peacemaker Award. Ayalon was the former director of Israel's Shin Bet and Commander of the Israeli Navy (ret.), and Erekat is the Chief Palestinian Negotiator.

This year's gala, which took place at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, raised over 1.2 million for the nonprofit organization Seeds of Peace which, since 1993, has graduated over 2,500 teenagers from four conflict regions from its internationally recognized leadership program. Through its International Camp in Maine, its Center for Coexistence in Jerusalem, international youth conferences, regional workshops, educational opportunities, and adult educator program, Seeds of Peace participants develop empathy, mutual respect, and self-confidence as well as leadership, communication and negotiation skills - all critical components necessary for peaceful coexistence.

International dignitaries and celebrities attended this year's Seeds of Peace gala to show their support and hear the discussion and insight that Blitzer, Ayalon and Erekat provided on the Middle East. The Prime Minister of Egypt, Ahmed Nazif, as well as Israeli Ambassador Dan Gillerman spoke during the VIP reception which was also attended by Ambassadors from Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Yemen. The Permanent Observer from the Mission of Palestine also attended as did representatives from the League of Arab States.

Celebrities attending this year's event included Jerry Stiller, who served as a host of the 2003 Seeds of Peace Gala and also served on this year's Gala Celebrity Committee.

The New York Women’s Foundation held their Celebrating Women 2005 Breakfast two weeks ago at the New York Marriott Marquis. Barbara Walters was the emcee and they honored Sheila Johnson, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), Geraldine Laybourne, Chairman and CEO of Oxygen Media and 2004 Nobel Peace Price recipient, Dr. Wangari Maathai.

The New York Women’s Foundation is the only public foundation in this country that is dedicated solely to helping low-income women and girls in New York City. For eighteen years, the Foundation has used a rigorous and informed grant-making process to identify and fund community-based organizations that provide critical services to, and advocate for, low-income women and girls. The Foundation strives to have a meaningful impact on the lives of all women in New York City by funding important community-based projects and by educating donors about the power of strategic and responsive philanthropy.
