The award winners ere selected from more than 150 nominations submitted
to a jury chaired by Robert A. M. Stern, founding
partner of Robert A. M. Stern Architects and Dean of the Yale School
of Architecture.
His fellow jurors were landscape historian Mac Griswold,
artist John
Woodrow Kelley, journalist and author Wendy Moonan;
scholar Henry
Hope Reed, architects Richard Sammons, Gil Schafer
III and Seth Weine,
and interior designer Bunny Williams.
The Arthur Ross Awards encompass eleven categories: architecture,
artisanship, community design, education, history and publishing,
landscape design, mural painting, patronage, rendering, sculpture,
and stewardship. There is a limit of five awards selected each year
from across this spectrum of vital and mutually-reinforcing roles.
The chairs of this year's Arthur Ross Awards were David and
Romy Cohen. David Cohen serves on the ICA&CA board of directors and
is a charter member of the Institute's Southern California Chapter.
He is the founder and president of the I.Grace Company, Family of
Companies, one of the premier builders in the nation today. Mr. Cohen
said, "I have been pleased to assist the Institute's growing
role in design education today as we strive together to improve America's
built future."
Proceeds from this event will help broaden this public service to
include non-architect home builders and, most recently, active chapters
of Habitat for Humanity International for whom traditional design
excellence can help foster diverse communities.
