The spirit of legendary college basketball coach and sports commentator, the late Jim Valvano came to New York for the premiere annual Spirit of Jimmy V New York Gala last Thursday with a high profile crowd at Pier Sixty.

Pam Valvano Strasser and John Strasser
The evening celebrated Valvano’s infamous “never give up” attitude and paid tribute to another plucky New Yorker, former mayor Rudy Giuliani, himself a cancer survivor, who received the inaugural Spirit of Jimmy V Award.

Hosting the evening was Valvano’s personal friend and broadcasting colleague ABC and ESPN commentator John Saunders. Duke University’s head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski delivered the evening’s keynote message. Jim Valvano’s brother, Nick Valvano, now CEO of the foundation was also in attendance along with Bill Walton, Ron Insana, Peggy Fleming, Judith Nathan Giuliani and Bill Bradley.

The Foundation was founded in 1993 by ESPN and Mr. Valvano. It has raised $45 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide and assures that 83 cents of every dollar raised goes directly into research.
