Another beautiful Spring day in New York; warm and sunny. After lunch at Michael’s I took a brief stroll up Fifth Avenue past the newly refurbished Plaza which is coming to life again, and got a shot of the tulip-bed on the corner by the Plaza Fountain and 59th Street. Across the street, a "Statue of Liberty" was placing crowns on the heads of tourists and unfurling the flag in front of the General William Tecumseh Sherman statue.

Another busy night in New York. Over at the Hearst Tower, there was a reception on the mezzanine celebrating the opening of “Harpers Bazaar & American Fashion -- 75 years of Headlines and Hemlines” hosted by Diane von Furstenberg, Glenda Bailey, editor-in-chief of Harpers Bazaar, and Stephen Kolb, head of the CFDA. Curated by Charlie Scheips, the show which features twelve mannequins wearing the fashions of such designers as Adrian, Valentina, Geoffrey Beene, Luis Estevez, Oscar de la Renta, Thom Browne, Doo-ri, and Ghakoon.

The show mirrors the chapters of the book “American Fashion” (Assouline) by Charlie Scheips and the CFDA. It will be on exhibition at the Hearst Tower through the summer. Computer problems were plaguing this writer late yesterday afternoon, throwing everying off-schedule, including the brain, so I got there on the late side. There were some boldfaced ones, as well as some actual fashion icons including the legendarily beautiful Carmen, as well as that Texas gal, Lynn Wyatt, and Kenneth Jay Lane; the great Pablo Manzoni, and Matthew Modine. But more on this in tomorrow’s Diary, when, one hopes, my cyber-world will have been restored.

Charlie Scheips, you will notice in the picture with Hearst Executive Vice President Michael Clinton and Jeanette Chang, is wearing a jacket from ... someplace (“kooky” was his word for it which places it somewhere in the area of 1957 to 1973) which he donned for the following party, the Creative Time gala benefit “Take Flight” over at Guastavino’s. They were honoring Beth Rudin DeWoody, the peripatetic, ubiquitous, always in motion contemporary art collector extraordinaire with an extraordinaire dinner and party (with surprise entertainment to delight everyone).

It was also Mrs. DeWoody’s birthday and she marked it by literally kicking up her heels. However, all that’s for tomorrow when, as I said, I hope my computer problems will be solved and I can live again in that state of New York somewhere between peace and wild anxiety.

This past Tuesday Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and David Rockefeller announced their joint pledge of $10 million to the MillionTreesNYC initiative to plant trees in public spaces including New York Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments and at City schools. This donation of private funds made to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City by Mr. Rockefeller and Bloomberg Philanthropies will allow over 18,000 trees to be planted throughout the five boroughs.
