The Lycée Français de New York held its 9th Annual Gala on Friday the first of February at Cipriani 55 Wall Street. The theme celebrated the school’s numerous environmentally oriented initiatives undertaken this year by the school. The event, themed La Vie en Vert, raised a record $1.7 million.

“The Gala was a magical night and I am proud of what we have accomplished so far and how we have mobilized the school, the students and the parents around our green initiatives,” said Elsa Berry Bankier, Chair of the Board.

An organic food week at the Lycée after the gala is one of the many initiatives embraced by the school. One of the school’s main goal is to maintain the building as green as possible.

“The Lycée is a thoughtfully designed and constructed building, that is well maintained and operated,” Yves Thézé, head of the school said, quoting a recent audit report. “Just to give a number, between 2005 and 2008, even though the population increased by 200 and even though we opened the auditorium, the school has decreased its annual electricity consumption by 200,000 kilowatts,” he added.

900 guests attended this year’s Gala, including Susan Fales-Hill, Chef of Le Bernardin, Eric Ripert, Princess Alexandra of Greece and her husband Nicolas Mirzayantz, Catherine Malandrino, Youri Djorkaeff,  French Ambassador Pierre Vimont, Permanent French Representative to the United Nations, Jean-Maurice Ripert, and France’s Consul Général in New York, Mr. François Delattre. Famous French singer Charlelie Couture was at the festivities as was Parfumeur Frédéric Malle. AXA’s Claude Bébéar and Citigroup’s Robert Rubin also graced the evening with their presence.

Guests were entertained by a procession/ parade choreographed by Earth Celebrations and featuring young Lycée Students dressed in “earthy” costumes. A choir composed of young students provided live entertainment as well. The dinner was prepared by the Chef at Cipriani in consultation with Chef Eric Ripert.

Every year, the Lycée honors an individual as the recipient of the Charles de Ferry de Fontnouvelle Award. This year, Claude Bébéar, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Axa Group, was the honoree. He received his award from Robert Rubin.

A large portion of the money raised during Gala is allotted to the school’s Scholarship Fund. The fund is central to maintaining the diverse student body, which represents more than 50 nationalities from different socioeconomic backgrounds. The scholarship fund allows the Lycée to go beyond the constraints of tuition in the admission process and enables students, who could not otherwise afford the opportunity, to benefit from a Lycée education at the state-of-the-art campus.
