The Cinema Society hosted a special screening of Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead from the Oscar-winning director Sidney Lumet (his 44th film). The film, hailed by critics as one of this year’s best pictures, is a crackling, riveting thriller about a robbery gone horribly awry. It boasts Oscar-worthy performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, and Ethan Hawke, all of whom were on hand for this starry night along with co-star Michael Shannon, and producers Paul Parmar, Michael Cerenzie, Brian Linse, and writer Kelly Masterson. The evening’s host, Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir  welcomed a stellar crowd to the screening and after-party on the Roof of the Gramercy Park Hotel (Sagatiba sponsored the evening).

Loving “Lost Desserts” It’s fall, which means book parties. Rizzoli has been celebrating the publication of Gail Monaghan’s latest book, “Lost Desserts,” throughout the month. Earlier this month, the publisher hosted a book signing and party in its flagship 57th Street store. On November 14th, the interior designer Lisa Jackson helped host a party at her Lucca & Co. showroom, on East 61st Street.

“I think you put a spell on us,” Wendy Perron, Editor-in-Chief of Dance Magazine said to Ohad Naharin, Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company, after a recent sold-out performance of his program “Three” at BAM. Batsheva was formed in 1964 by Martha Graham and Baroness Batsheva De Rothschild. Naharin was appointed artistic director in 1990. With 250 performances a year in the world’s most prestigious theaters and festivals, Batsheva is celebrated for its bold and innovative artistry. This acclamation has earned the compact, dynamic company the reputation of a leader on the global performing arts map. Batsheva has an international corps, made up of unique dancers from Israel and abroad. In fact, dancers are encouraged to affirm their distinct creative gifts as creators on their own.

“I take the week off from the UN when Batsheva comes to New York. Batsheva is the pinnacle of beauty and excellence; they are the real Ambassadors of Israel,” Dan Gillerman said before he introduced Executive Director Naomi Bloch Fortis who announced that Batsheva will be back in New York with Ohad Naharin’s “Kamuyot” at the Jewish Community Center on Amsterdam Avenue in March 2008.

Earlier this month Bruno Jamais and Katherine M. Rothman hosted the 5th anniversary celebration of Bruno Jamais Restaurant Club. The restaurant was transformed into an art gallery for the evening featuring the works of famed French Artist Cyrille Margarit whose celebrity clients and subjects have included Russell Simmons, Ivana Trump, Madonna, and Bruce Willis. All guests had the opportunity to enter a raffle featuring five luxury prizes including a $25,000 necklace courtesy of Suz Andreasen Couture, a $5,000 gift certificate to Bradford Rowley Portraits, David Yurman Cufflinks, a Cole Haan handbag, and a case of Chateau Guillaume Red Wine courtesy of Bruno Jamais Restaurant. $1,600 was raised through the raffle and 100% of all proceeds will benefit Riverkeeper, www.RiverKeeper.org.
