“Olympic Gold,” an exhibition of Gold Medals from Olympic and Paralympic athletes opened at the Forbes Galleries at 62 Fifth Avenue at 12th Street went on display last Thursday night with a cocktail preview reception. The show traces the history of American Athleticism and offers visitors a special view of the unique journey an athlete takes while representing his country at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Besides the Gold Medals of the athletes that are on display, the exhibition includes personal objects that helped make these athletes Gold Medal winners. There is, for example gymnast Shannon Miller’s Gold Medals as well as her baby booties that had a bar attached to correct the pigeon-toed condition she was born with. For Eric Berquist they are displaying the titanium plate he now wears around his neck – it was inserted in his collar bone after a skiing accident prior to his wining the gold in 1998.
“Olympic Gold” is presented by the National Jewelry Institute in cooperation with the U.S. Olympic Committee. The National Jewelry Institute is a non-profit organization, the first jewelry institute in America founded with the mission of preserving and educating the public about fine jewelry as art objects. The corporate partners for this exhibition are AXA Art Insurance Corporation, The Citibank Private Bank, and Cole-Haan.
The Forbes Galleries are open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 to 4 and on Thursdays by appointment for group tours (contact 212-206-5549), and admission is free. For more information about the National Jewelry Institute, visit http://www.nationaljewelryinstitute.org |
