Wrapping up the Fete

Madison Square Park. 4:20 PM. Photo: JH.
The 4th annual Fete de Swifty was held Tuesday night in the big white three-quarters-of-a-block long tent on East 73rd Street between Lexington and Third Avenues.

This fete was, as you may know the brainchild of Liz Smith who wanted to find ways to get New Yorkers (and friends of New York) to contribute to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. The Mayor’s Fund is used to enhance programs for New Yorkers. The first couple of years the funds went to help pay for supervised after-school activities at the city’s playgrounds. Last year and this year, the funds benefit the Family Justice Initiative to serve the pressing problems of domestic violence and abuse.

This year’s honorary chairs were Nicole Kidman and Ali and Joe Torre. Co-chairs (also, like the honorary chairs, major donors) were John Castle, J. Christopher Daly, Bill Rondina, Christine and Stephen Schwarzman and Rob Speyer. Associates Chairs were Caroline Loomis and Justin Steinberg and Zibby and Andrew Right (Mrs. Right is also the daughter of Stephen Schwarzman). Founding Committee members are Stephen Attoe and Robert Caravaggi (proprietors of the restaurant Swifty’s), DPC, Deborah Krulewitch, Christopher Meigher, Gillian Miniter, Peter Rogers and Elizabeth Finkle Sans.

There were also kind donations from Oizze, Quest Magazine, Estee Lauder Companies, Madame Tussaud’s, Glorious Food, Prosper Maufoux, Starr African Rum, Brooklyn Brewery, Made In New York and Talbots; not to mention a long long list of prominent New Yorkers (and non-New Yorkers) who contributed thousands of dollars to the cause.

Mayor Bloomberg  made an appearance, gave a brief congratulatory speech of thanks and stayed for more than an hour mingling with his constituency. Among the long and distinguished list of patrons and supporters and committee de Fete members whom I saw on Tuesday night were: Ron Perelman, Eleanora and Michael Kennedy, Herb Siegel (with Jeanne Leff), Cynthia Boardman, Mildred Brinn, Hugh Bush, Joe and Hilary Califano, Joy and Jonathan Ingham, Wendy Carduner, Doug Cramer, Cornelia Guest, Audrey Gruss, Gill Fuller, Patricia Patterson, Tony Hyt, Roz Jacobs, Jacques Leviant, Jonathan and Somers Farkas, Barbara de Portago, Louise Grunwald, Emilia and Pepe Fanjul, Joan Helpern, Jeanne Lawrence, Kenny Lane, Stephanie Krieger, Terry Allen Kramer and Nick Simunek, Tony Manning, Nazee and Joe Moinian, Dick Nye and Francesca Stanfill, Norma Dana, Alex Papachristidis and Scott Nelson, Charlotte Ford, Marjorie Reed Gordon, Ellen and Ian Graham, Carl and Sabina Forsythe, Tobie Roosevelt, Steven Rubenstein, Bunny Williams and John Rosselli, Nina and John Richter, and, as I said, a glittering cast of hundreds. Good times were had by all for what has become the most popular society/charity gala annual block party in New York.

The ring leader, major mover and shaker and push-comes-to-shovely was, is, however, the indefatigable Ms Liz who not only moves mountains but coaxes the millions from the millionaires and billionaires and manages, despite her heavy work schedule and charitable schedule to oversee what has become a very large cocktail event : this year there were more than 800 guests, and they raised more than $800,000 for the cause. There was also a silent auction with some fabulous items which you can still bid on on charitybuzz.com.
