Last Thursday, May 10th, New York City Ballet held its 2012 Spring Gala at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. The gala performance featured a one-time-only salute to France titled À La Française. The programfeatured two World Premiere ballets, one by NYCB’s Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins to a score by the French composer Marc-André Dalbavie with costumes designed by Gilles Mendel of J. Mendel; and one by French-born choreographer and former NYCB Principal Dancer Benjamin Millepied to a commissioned score by Nico Muhly with costumes designed by Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte.

The evening also included a major revival of George Balanchine’s Symphony in C, which was created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947 to a score by the French composer Georges Bizet. The revival featured new costume designs by NYCB Director of Costumes Marc Happel, earring designs by Jamie Wolf, and headpieces created by Robert Sorrell, in collaboration with Swarovski.

There were over 800 guests in attendance and the event raised $2 million for NYCB. The evening’s décor transformed the promenade to make guests feel as if they were in France. The French themes implemented were interpreted as the Empire Period and extended to a garden theme. The evening was catered by Glorious Food and décor by DeJuan Stroud.

On Thursday, May 10, 2012, The New York Women’s Foundation® (NYWF) Celebrating Women® Breakfast honored Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Domestic Workers Alliance Ai-jen Poo, and Executive Director of the Women’s Center for Education and Career Advancement Merble Reagon, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. Secretary Clinton was awarded with The Century Award, while Ms. Poo and Ms. Reagon were awarded the Celebrating Women® Awards.

In 25 years, the NYWF will reach $33 million in funding to over 280 women-lead, nonprofit organizations, improving the lives of 5.4 million women and girls in New York City; 81% of those nonprofits succeed in thriving today. This year, the NYWF Celebrating Women® Breakfast had over 2,300 guests in attendance.

NYWF Board Chair, Diana Taylor welcomed all attendees and introduced the 69 Grantee Partners for the NYWF, seated on stage on the dias, to the Breakfast. Speaker of the New York City Council, Christine Quinn then spoke regarding her work with the gay and lesbian community, applauded President Obama on his support for marriage equality and praised the NYWF for “making [New York City] and the world, a better place for every girl.” Afterward, NYWF Founding Mothers Helen LaKelly Hunt and Betty Terrell-Cruz, were brought to the stage, and spoke about the advancement of the NYWF since its inception in 1987.

Merble Reagon, honoree, was introduced and spoke regarding the self-sufficiency calculator she helped to create and her desire to sustain the work that NYWF supports for the future, “I started doing this work for my generation, I continue for my daughter’s and granddaughter’s generations.” Honoree, Ai-jen Poo, also spoke regarding the work, “care, love and support,” that NYWF does which spans multiple generations. Ms. Poo noted that, “when women on the front lines of inequality come together to affect change, everyone wins.”

Following the two honorees, four women were introduced and spoke regarding their experience with grantee partners of the NYWF. According to Sheena, “failing is not a sign of weakness, it’s the steps you take after that.”

Another young woman, Ebony, then spoke about being arrested at a young age, while pregnant, and having her daughter while in jail. After her release from jail, she lived in a grantee partner run home where she built herself up and changed her life, she said, “change takes time, love makes the difference.”

Ana Oliveira, President & CEO of the NYWF took the stage and spoke about the ‘game changing time of 2012’ for the foundation. She then introduced Robyn Brady Ince, Anita Channapati, and Anne Delaney, Co-Chairs of the 2012 Celebrating Women® Breakfast.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton accepted the Century Award from Abigail E. Disney, her longtime friend. Secretary Clinton honored the grantees that comprise the New York Women’s Foundation and spoke about overcoming difficult circumstances as women, movingly referencing her mother as an example. Secretary Clinton noted that her mother overcame financial difficulties but remained resilient and committed to her family not only by helping herself, but with the assistance and kindness of others. She mentioned that we now take this kindness for granted, “but in the 1920’s there weren’t a lot of formal organizations doing this kind of work.” Secretary Clinton also “expressed on behalf of [her] mother great gratitude for reaching out that hand, for providing that support, that safe place, and for giving hope and love to so many who need it.”

On May 9, 2012, the Grammy® Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra held its Bach to Brazil at Jazz at Lincoln Center. This unprecedented event united several Brazilian living musical legends on the same stage, representing an exciting cross-genre collaboration for Orpheus. Headlining this special evening were singer/songwriter Ivan Lins, percussionist Cyro Baptista, and guitarist/composers Juarez Moreira and Chico Pinheiro.

The program included selections by Brazilian giants Villa Lobos, Jobim, Pixinguinha, and Baden Powell as well as popular works by European masters Bach and Chopin, framed in unexpected ways. New versions of original compositions by Lins, Pinheiro, and Moreira were arranged especially for this event by Artistic Advisor Robert Sadin, whose Grammy® Award-winning recordings and concert work include critically-acclaimed collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Sting, Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Kathleen Battle, and Orpheus, among other distinguished artists.

This musical abraço (embrace) showcased the kaleidoscopic palette of European inspiration and Brazilian innovation that has led to the creation of passionate melodies and joyful rhythms that continue to capture the world's hearts and imaginations.

All proceeds from the Bach to Brazil Gala will support Access Orpheus and the Orpheus Institute, the orchestra's signature music education programs that provide free musical instruction and a look at democratic leadership at work to the next generation of musicians and university students.

Over 1,300 leaders, staff, and friends of The Mount Sinai Medical Center gathered on Thursday, May 3, for the 27th annual Crystal Party at the Central Park Conservatory Garden to celebrate a year of significant discoveries and accomplishments for Mount Sinai.

The celebration was hosted by Mount Sinai Trustee, David Windreich and his wife, Christine Hikawa.

"Thanks to their stewardship of this extraordinary event, over $3 million has been raised for Mount Sinai," said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Tent in Conservatory Gardens

Mount Sinai's current projects include the Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine, a 500 thousand square foot, state of the art research center, and a new residential tower for prospective tenants.

Peter May, chairman of the Boards of Trustees at The Mount Sinai Medical Center said, "Both of these properties generated much-needed jobs during economically uncertain times, and will continue to do so as the labs and clinical facilities are opened and expand."
