Socially obligatory for one reason or another

Today’s Diary about the days of Mortimer’s when Glenn Bernbaum held sway over a prominent part of New York social life in the mid-70s through the mid-90s, was a dramatic reminder of how social life has changed a decade into the 21st century.
Yesterday while perusing Patrick McMullan’s party pictures from the past two weeks, mainly in the Hamptons, I couldn’t help comparing just how great the changes are in terms of activity, venue and the way people present themselves. It is true that the generations of the 20 to 30-somethings have a lot less to do with the 40 to 80-somethings, and vice versa. Nowadays it barely rates a thought. There are so many differences.
Today a lot of the social life both in town and in the Hamptons (and no doubt elsewhere) are held in commercial places, often with the purported objective of raising some money for some charity (while selling some of the merchandise), or booksignings, or cocktail parties to raise money for charity. All right minded and no doubt serious in more ways than one. But also cookie-cutter, consumer-oriented and more often than not socially obligatory for one reason or another. This is not a protestation but rather an observation of the present state of things. All of which will, no doubt, change, progress, transform as it always does, when it does. |
