More than 600 attended Americas Society’s annual Spring Party – its twenty-eighth – two Wednesdays ago at Cipriani Wall Street.

The Society awarded its Gold Medal to Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, founding chairman of the Fundación Cisneros; Carlos Fuentes, celebrated as one of the greatest writers in the Spanish-speaking world; and Peter Munk, founder and chairman of the board of Barrick Gold Corporation. The three were honored for their creative and philanthropic contributions to the arts, education, and social initiatives within the Americas. The event raised $2.7 million for Americas Society’s programs.

Americas Society chairman William Rhodes opened the evening which included a performance by the thirty-piece Mariachi Tapiato. David Rockefeller, founder of the Americas Society introduced the honorees and Brian Mulroney, former Prime Minister of Canada. Mr. Fuentes reflected on the history of dialogue between Latin America and the United States and the important role played to that end by Americas Society.

The American Museum of Natural History held its 16th annual Corporate Dinner last Tuesday night and honored David Koch, Executive Vice President of Koch Industries. The evening brought out some of the city’s most distinguished business leaders and philanthropists.

The Museum’s president, Ellen V. Futter presented Mr. Koch with the Distinguished Service to Science and Education Award in recognition of his commitment and contributions to science education and cultural programs.

Cocktails were served outside on the Arthur Ross Terrace, followed dinner in the David H. Koch Dinosaur Wing. Mr. Koch has become a big benefactor of the Museum in recent years and although I don’t know this for a fact, if I were a betting man I’d say that Mr. Koch’s contributions to the dinosaur wing were inspired by his children.

The Dinosaur Wing at the Museum of Natural History is a wonder not only for all of us but especially for small children who are compelled to learn from the curiosity the dinosaurs provoke in them. There are lots of kids, little ones even, who know the name of every specimen and feature in that wing.

The evening was chaired by Roger Altman, chairman of Evercore Partners, and Steven Denning, chairman of General Atlanti LLC; Victor F. Ganzi, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hearst Corporation, and Walter Shipley, Retired Chairman of the Board of The Chase Manhattan Corporation. Proceeds from the dinner support ongoing educational and scientific programs at the Museum.

The American Ballet Theatre hosted its 3rd annual Noche Latina, a celebreation of the company’s Spanish and Latin American dancers last Tuesday night at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center.

There was a 6 pm cocktails followed by an award dinner on the Grand Tier. At 8 o’clock the performance of Don Quixote began.

Honorees for the evening were Carolina Herrera and former ABT principal dancer Julio Bocca were honored with the inaugural Fernando Bujones Award.

Last Monday night, the New York world of film and media gathered together to honor the students of the Ghetto Film School at the 4th Annual Ghetto Film School (GFS) Benefit Dinner and Awards Ceremony.

Based in the South Bronx, GFS is an award winning, non-profit organization that provides classic film school education to its students at no cost.

The evening included cocktails, an intimate dinner and student Scholarship Awards presentations from The Creative Artists Agency, CNN, The Independent Film Channel, and Turner Entertainment.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, New York City Film Commissioner Katherine Oliver and Damon Dash each presented scholarship awards to GFS student filmmakers. The evening generated more than$120,000 for Ghetto Film School and its upcoming annual student. Thesis Film Project which will take place this year in Kampala, Uganda.

Guests included the Beastie Boys, Delroy Lindo, Evan Shapiro, Executive Vice President of The Independent Film Channel, Greg D’Alba of CNN, Carol Radziwill, Rachael Horovitz, Actor Jonathan Tucker, and DJ Tommie Sunshine.

Cinema Society razzle-dazzle. The Cinema Society and Piaget recently teamed up for an evening for the dazzling film Flawless

The film, from director Michael Radford (Il Postino, The Merchant of Venice), is a riveting diamond-heist thriller set in swinging 1960's London, starring Demi Moore and Michael Caine.

Both Demi Moore and Michael Radford joined Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir for the screening of the picture at the Tribeca Grand Hotel and the party which followed in the Penthouse of the Soho Grand Hotel.
