| It’s Thanksgiving Week. Notice how the atmosphere is already changing? For many of us it’s anticipation of something restorative. That big (too big?) meal and the afternoon nap afterwards? Sunday on Thursday. And on Friday too. We are a nation amidst great change right now. Our new President is a reflection of that as much as anything. These are times when Gratitude is an ally. This upcoming holiday gives all of us the opportunity to lend our thoughts to giving thanks, a universal strategy if there ever was one. So we thought it might be a good time for our supportive friends here at NYSD (advertisers) to tell us what they were thinking about vis-à-vis Thanksgiving:
For years Elizabeth Fondaras held an annual Bastille Day luncheon at her East Hampton beach house. It was a very popular party for a number of reasons having to do with the hostess. But the number one reason was the food. Too good to be bad. Vincent. Someone told me he produces the same results in the “Domestics” side of the business too. He takes care of you. That’s the job. He enjoys it. You know that because in the middle of everything, he laughs a lot. So when we asked him to send us something about Thanksgiving, what does he send us? A recipe for Corn Pudding. I haven’t had it yet but I bet it’s good, real good ... Corn Pudding 2 Tablespoons melted Butter 4 cups Corn 6 Eggs 2 cups 1/2 & 1/2 1/2 cup Flour 2 Tablespoons Sugar Salt & Pepper / to taste Place all in a blender till creamy. Pour in Buttered 10"diameter x 2 -1/2" souffle dish Dot with butter and sprinkle with some nutmeg Bake @350 degrees for 1 hr. 15 minutes [6]
Charlotte Moss is a Southern girl. You knew that, right? This is what she wrote: It’s nice to create a family tradition, gather your favorite recipes from your mother and grandmother, have the recipes printed and hand down as gifts year after year. Keeping traditions going and being with family is what the holidays are all about. And remember, presentation is everything; a beautiful table is a memorable table. When I read that last line about “presentation” being everything, I could only think: god, wouldn’t it be great to see that table. Some of you would be talking about it for days, even next year. Did you ever see our interview [10] with Charlotte at her own house? LMD [11] The gang at LMD are optimists. Cockeyed? No. A preoccupation, maybe commitment to beauty, truth is beauty, maybe yes. You can tell by this message from them. Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune, but do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.Whatever your labors and aspirations ... keep peace in your soul. Be cheerful. | Circa [14] Circa/Chris del Gatto, Circa’s CEO/creator doesn’t sit still. There’s the diamonds and then there’s the chukkers. What’s he up to? Me and a small cadre of American polo players are here in Argentina bringing Thanksgiving tradition to Argentina. Having a traditional turkey dinner and Argentine asado all in one night with bottles of Malbec, a great Argentine red wine. Many thanks in here. QDGdesign [15] Nan Quick and I have never met in person. We know each other only through correspondence. She’s another one of those aforementioned optimists. I don’t know for sure but that’s my instinct. Nan Quick is Johnny On the Spot. She’s one of those girls who loves what she does and does it all the time everywhere, making use of all the moments and the elements that come her way. | Shafer Plastic Surgery [18] Dr. Shafer is a new advertiser. In fact we’ve never had a cosmetic surgeon advertise before. He came to us serendipitously: JH went to school with a lifelong friend of the doctor’s brother. Dr. Shafer had worked under the great Sherrell Aston before he started his own private practice. I met the doctor only recently – last week at the Israel Philharmonic Gala at Carnegie Hall. I asked him about business – my business. Had he got any response from his new ad? Yes, he had. He was pleased. So were we. This is what Dr. Shafer told us about Thanksgiving for him: This is my first Thanksgiving here in NYC. There have been many transitions over the past year. The most exciting is the opening of our new office, Shafer Plastic Surgery, in the Harper Collins Building. Despite the present economic uncertainties, our advertising partnership with New York Social Diary has allowed us to share our new office with friends and patients. Each year brings new friends and family. This Thanksgiving we will be celebrating with our new extended family. This summer, my brother, Aaron Shafer, married a woman from Turkey, Solen Altop. So this Thanksgiving we will have Turkey one day and traditional Turkish food (not turkey) the following day. With autumn waning and winter quickly approaching, we are settling in our new surroundings and enjoying the best that New York City has to offer. |

Rocky Mountain High. Nikki Sedacca, creator of those gossamer-like gold bracelets you see on her NYSD ad is taking time out from her jewelry business. She and her family are hitting the slopes in Breckenridge, Colorado for a refreshing Thanksgiving holiday and anniversary celebration. Apres ski, the wonderful homemaker she is, Nikki will be fixing a traditional dinner with turkey, duck and trimmings galore. Then it's back out there to work it all off!
